By Jeff Bagley, Platinum Account Manager

Over the course of time, I've had numerous discussions with IT managers, system administrators and even end-users who have had the same question: "Why is the JD Edwards JAS URL so long and hard to remember? Can it be simpler?

The answer is a resounding,"yes!", it can be simpler.  How about just opening a browser window and typing in E1PD910 and have it open up the JPD910 JAS Login Screen?  How simple is that?

This can be done through the use of the document root and virtual hosting parameters in the Apache HTTP configuration.  After configuration, your users need only remember a short URL that makes sense and is easy to remember, instead of the normal:

 http://fully> < http://www.getgsi.com> qualified server name>:<http Port>/jde/E1Menu.maf< http://www.getgsi.com>

What does all of this mean? To your end-user, it makes no sense.  But, telling an end-user to open a browser and type in "E1PD910" would make absolute sense, and would be easy for them to remember.

Q&A
By: Bill Rehm, Principal DBA/CNC Consultant

Should I back up the deployment server planner database? (part 1 of 2)

The deployment server planner database is a critical part of your JDE system. The details of your system setup along with information on every server, workstation, code modification and update you've done is recorded in that database. Rebuilding a deployment server from scratch is a long, complicated, and expensive process. Backups of the planner database are absolutely necessary.

I take a file-level copy of the deployment server directories every night. That will take care of it, right?

Maybe not.  It is possible that your file-level backup will fail to capture the database files since they can be in use by the system at any time.  Even if the copy is successful, your backup might be corrupted since the database service is running and connected to the DB even when nothing is going on.

How do I back up the planner database then?

Oracle has an official recommendation described in Solution ID 1052047.1, "How to Backup and Restore the Local Planner Database (OEE or SSE)". In there, they say to use the planner DB detach scripts to detach the databases so that you can copy the physical files to another location. You could also stop the database services rather than having to run the detach scripts, but Oracle warns that unless you detach the databases first there could be corruption.

Well, I don't want to do this manually. Is there any way to automate the backups?

Yes!  After all, the local database is a full version that is basically limited to run on one machine and doesn't come with management tools.  Whether you have SSE or OEE, you can use the appropriate management tool to perform backups of the planner database.  For SSE, you can use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and Oracle Enterprise Manager or Grid Control (OEM)for OEE.  In fact, a little known secret is that OEM can manage SQL databases with a free plugin, so if you are an Oracle shop, but somehow have an SSE local database, you don't have to worry.  Both databases are fully accessible via their command-line tools as well.

Last month's question:

Why doesn't 6 want anything to do with 7?

Answer:  Because 7 8 9!  Get it? Seven ate nine!

There were several correct responses to the April Expertiser, but the first correct answer was from Kathy Shell from Batesville Casket Company. Congratulations, Kathy, on winning a GSI padfolio!

This Month's Expertiser:

Outside a room there are 3 separate buttons (A, B and C) that connect in some unknown order to 3 light bulbs inside the room. There are no windows in the room and the door is closed. Is it possible to determine which switch corresponds to which light by visiting the room only once?

Meet the GSI Team
John Bagwell, AppCare Consultant

"I heard such great things about GSI from other employees who are also my friends".  This was what led John to join our team and we're thrilled to have him.  "I was especially impressed as I went through the interview process, with GSI's culture of camaraderie and teamwork", John says.    -->

John is the newest member of our "night shift" team where he performs routine system checks, builds and deploys packages, and keep's an eye on things for our AppCare clients.

John lives in Estero, FL with his family.  When he's not working at GSI, the most important thing to him is spending time with his family.  He likes to go hiking and kayaking and loves to go diving and playing bass guitar.  He and his family are cat lovers, "meow!".

John is proud of his family and especially his Mom and Dad who he believes inspired him to be who he is today.

By Bob Aikins, Business Analyst/Security Specialist

Many clients ask me the same question all the time..."why should I perform a JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Security Assessment?"

There are many reasons to have an EnterpriseOne Security Assessment.

  • Your company is publicly traded and you are governed by the Sarbanes Oxley Act
  • You are not public but want to comply with JD Edwards Security best practices
  • To have a clear understanding of potential security gaps in your business critical EnterpriseOne system

Best times to do a Security Assessment:

  • During an upgrade or new install is the perfect time to do a security audit/assessment.  This will save time in having to go back after you do the upgrade or new install and will save a lot of re-work if issues are identified ahead of time.
  • It is also highly recommended to perform the assessment before an internal or external audit, especially if you have not had an assessment in a while.

Make sure to allow time for an assessment as part of your upgrade plan.  It will yield significant dividends.

Q&A
By: Jake Ballard, Manager - Support Services

Q: Can I configure JAS instances on the same server to run in different time zones?

A:  Yes!  Let's say you have two production JAS instances running on the same server.  The first instance is designed for local production users at the corporate location in the US-Eastern time zone.  The second instance is designed for users connecting in from Tianjin, China.  Since the server that is hosting these JAS instances is located in the corporate data center and is set to US-Eastern Time Zone setting, both instances will inherit that setting.

The solution is to utilize the Java Arguments section to force one of the instances to a specific time zone.  This will need to be changed within the admin console setup based on your Web Server (WLS, WAS, or OAS).  It is the same location that you utilize for setting JVM memory settings.  You will just add one additional switch (as shown below) to alter the time zone offset from GMT that you want configured on that JVM.  This example is the offset used for Tianjin, China (GMT+08:00):

-Duser.timezone=GMT+08:00

After completing this change, the JVM will need to be recycled to reflect these changes.

Meet the GSI Team
Chanon Dillard, Cient Manager

After having worked with many individuals on the GSI team in previous roles, Chanon decided it was time to work for GSI, where integrity and "family" culture are key elements of the corporate mission.  We couldn't be happier and prouder to have her.  She brings with her a level of experience and new ideas that will help us continue to grow and expand the services our clients expect from us.

Chanon, in her "Client Manager" role, will be focused primarily on our clients where our engagements require a skilled Project Manager for functional/applications support.  Chanon brings with her top-notch skills in the JD Edwards Financials and Distribution applications.  In addition to her Client Manager role, she will be supporting our Account Executives in their endeavors to bring GSI expertise in new products and services that help our clients run their business on the JD Edwards applications platform.

"I am focused on helping GSI with it's continued growth on the functional side of the house.  My goal is to be an integral part of all of our clients' success by focusing on improving their business processes," said Chanon.

What is her favorite part about being a part of the GSI family?

"As we all know, the JD Edwards professional network is a very small world.  It is so nice to be part of a company where I feel like I already know everyone.  So many of us have already met in a past life, whether while I was tenured at JD Edwards or at a mutual client over the years.  It feels like I have come home!"

Chanon loves to travel, especially when the destination includes a beach.   "When I am on a vacation for a week, guaranteed I am somewhere with sand," she states.  With a two-year old and teenagers at home in Buford, Georgia, Boy Scouts, band trips, and peewee soccer, she doesn't get to do that as often as she'd like to.

Chanon describes herself as passionate about her family and about embracing new things every day with a desire to learn and to be challenged.

GSI's AppCare Services Prove Popular with JD Edwards Customers

 Service Expansion and 99 Percent Client Satisfaction Rate Power GSI’s Managed Services Offerings

DENVER, April 8, 2013 – AppCare Services, a suite of managed services for JD Edwards system users, is proving to be one of the most popular and subscribed to GSI, Inc. (www.GetGSI.com) service offerings.

            Introduced in 2004, AppCare Services supports clients’ JDE software applications, development efforts, configurable network computing (CNC), database management systems and hosting needs on an around-the-clock basis. Backed by an industry exclusive 100 percent satisfaction guarantee, GSI’s AppCare Services are the broadest and most flexible range of JDE managed services in the industry.

            Dozens of GSI clients are currently using the service which has tripled in revenues the last three years while maintaining a 99 percent client satisfaction rate.

            GSI’s AppCare Services, and its popular Business Value Assessment, are being featured this week here at the Collaborate 13 conference (booth 335). Both services are designed to ensure that customers obtain the best value from their JD Edwards system.

Dermalogica, a leading skin product manufacturer, has used AppCare services for three years to help with its CNC work.

            “We rely heavily on our JD Edwards system to process our highly customized sales orders,” said Don Lamoureux, director of software development for Dermalogica. “We watched issues that we’ve been dealing with for years get resolved in a matter of weeks after beginning our relationship with GSI. As a result, we’ve minimized downtime and maximized our efficiency for distribution, manufacturing and financials stemming from the JDE EnterpriseOne software.”

            Another AppCare Services client, ABC Companies, a leader in motor coach and transit equipment sales and service, initially hired GSI to resolve a serious issue that impacted the business following the company’s first go-live phase.

            “Recently, we engaged GSI to be our implementation partner for the most critical phase of our rollout of JD Edwards software to our other commercial lines of business. Through these engagements, GSI has stood by its 100 percent satisfaction guarantee – even on occasions where we wouldn't have asked for or expected a credit,” said Rob Grimm, IT Director at ABC Companies.

            “When your people average 15 years of real-world experience, you can do things other companies can’t,” said Kevin R. Herrig, president and CEO of GSI.  “The unmatched expertise within the GSI family allows us to provide our clients with a dedicated team of experts for 50 to 80 percent less than a single full-time staff resource…all backed by our 100 percent satisfaction guarantee.”

The full range of AppCare services include:

·      gFlex is designed for companies that need a “block of hours” to use over a set time period for ad-hoc assistance; choose from  CNC, application or development activities.  All work is performed remotely with appointments pre-scheduled.

·     gShare provides specialized service for companies that want a real-world expert to help co-manage their system or for periodic/ad-hoc support. It includes scheduled as well as unscheduled requests for CNC, application or development activities. Clients purchase a monthly bucket of service hours under this plan.

·    gStaff supports companies that prefer access to unlimited CNC, application or development support for a fixed monthly fee. This is GSI’s most popular plan.

·    CompleteCare includes CNC, application and development activities. It includes all gStaff services for all three support areas at a fixed fee covering unlimited requests.

·    CompleteCare+ is designed for companies that need to outsource or co-manage all JDE hardware and CNC activity with additional options for application and development support. It also offers infrastructure hosting and provides the opportunity to phase in support for other software packages including MS Exchange, Blackberry and more. This is GSI’s most comprehensive service offering.

·    WorldCare is a specialized service for JDE World customers that provides unlimited programming and system administration support for their live production system – all for a fixed monthly fee that is typically 50 percent less than one full-time employee.

Below are the next steps in my process to validate the copy:

Step 2: Define the source and target schemas in the variables below

declare

v_cnt number;

cszSourceOwner CONSTANT varchar(30) :='CVCTL';

cszTargetOwner CONSTANT varchar(30) :='CRPCTL';

szSQL varchar2(1024); (the above was included in last months' newsletter)

begin

---Count the number of rows for for each table in the Schema which names cszSourceOwner for v_rec in (select table_name from all_tables a where owner=cszSource Owner order by 10 loop execute immediate 'select count(*) from '||cszSourceOwner||'.'|| v_rec.table_name into v_cnt; insert into recs values (cszSourceOwner, v_rec.table_name,v_cnt); end loop;

---Count the number of rows for each table in the Schema which names match cszTargetOwner for v_rec in (select table_name from all_tables a where owner=cszTargetOwner order by 1) loop execute immediately 'select count(*) from '||cszTargerOwner||'.'|| v_rec.table_name into v_cnt; insert into recs value (cszTargetOwner, v_rec.table_name, v_cnt); end loop;

end;

/

Step 3: Analyze the differences

--In this part of the script, you have to type the names of the source and target schemas again. I have been working to use the variables defined above without luck so far.

select a1.szTable, a1.iRecs,a2.iRecs, a1.irecs-a2.irecs Diff from recs a1 full join recs a2 on a1.stables=a2.sztable where a1.szowner-'CVCTL' and a2.szOwner='CRPCTL' and a1.irecs-a2.irecs<>0:

Step 4: Drop the temporary table once you have finished begin execute immediate 'drop table RECS'; exception when others the null; end;

Kickoff 2013 at Atlantis Resort, Freeport, Bahamas

GSI just wrapped up its annual Kickoff event at the Atlantis Resort in Freeport, Bahamas. The entire GSI Family spent 3 days discussing hoto serve our clients better. "As a services provider, any offering that you create can be duplicated

pretty quickly," said Kevin R. Herrig, president & CEO. "Our service and our expertise are our differentiator and we work extremely hard on improving both every day."

Atlantis

Yes, all work and no play would make any place boring.  Having half-day meetings allowed us to get the work out of the way and then have fun at the water park, Dolphin Cay, museums, marina, ...and the best part...just hanging out with each other at the pool.  We also had our Celebration Dinner outside by the beach where we chatted the night away and handed out our awards to those that went above and beyond in 2012.

"GSI's most valuable asset is our people," said Kevin R. Herrig, president and CEO.  "When you put your people first, it becomes very clear that ROI isn't just a formula in a spreadsheet  We are extremely proud of our people and we will continue to recognize their efforts throughout the year and at events like this."

This only leaves us with one question...where should GSI Kickoff be next year?

GSI to Present at Collaborate 13

ATLANTA, March 12, 2013 – Organizations seeking to upgrade to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1 can be confused by the dizzying amount of information emerging on features, functionality and pricing.

            In an effort to help provide the clearest roadmap to decison-making, GSI’s Mark Andrzejewski, principal solution architect, and Shawn Scanlon, executive vice president, will host an afternoon seminar on Tuesday, April 9 (2:00PM local time) at Collaborate 13. They will review the latest features – including BI Publisher, Advanced Workflow, Advanced Lot Tracking Keeping and OneView Reporting – and help attendees to understand what's included in their licensing and what is additional.

            Collaborate 13, the annual technology and applications forum for the Oracle community, gets underway April 7 through April 11 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. GSI, a customer service-centric ERP software integration specialist focused on JD Edwards products and an Oracle gold partner, will exhibit in booth 335. The company will be featuring its comprehensive range of AppCare service offerings and its very popular Business Value Assessment service which delivers a strategic assessment of a company’s business needs to ensure its JDE software is being properly utilized to support – and not hinder – their growth. In addition, GSI will again be raffling off a Caribbean cruise dream vacation for two.

            “GSI is a big proponent of industry education,” said Kevin R. Herrig, president and chief executive officer, GSI. “We continue to invest considerable resources in developing free presentations, webinars, gold papers and newsletters because we believe that a well-educated user is the key to getting the most out of any business system.”

Consultant's Corner
By Jorge Sepulveda, CNC

There are times in the life of every CNC when we need to refresh environment data. We have learned to do the job using different techniques like using R98403, SQL Scripts and other techniques.

One important part of the copy process is to validate that the copy completed successfully.  Since JDE does not provide us with a tool to compare the number of records between two tables, we need to create our own scripts in SQL to read the numbers of rows in each table and compare them.  Using the following Oracle SQL Script, you can generate a count on all records for your source and target schemas. If the copy happened without incident, you will have an empty result.  If the copy has any inconsistencies, you will be able to identify the problem tables and resolve.

Below is the SQL Script I use for validating the copy. Please use caution and execute it one step at a time.

Step 1: Create a temporary table to store the row count for each schema:

set serveroutput on

/

create table RECS (

szOwner varchar(30),

szTable varchar(30),

iRecs  int);

 /

Step 2: Define the source and target schemas in the variables below

declare

v_cnt number;

cszSourceOwner CONSTANT varchar(30) :='CVCTL';

cszTargetOwner CONSTANT varchar(30) :='CRPCTL';

szSQL varchar2(1024);

Next month's GSInsider will provide the final steps in this process.

Q&A
By: Shawn Scanlon, Executive Vice President

Q:  My business is construction with a lot of union labor. We are currently on XE. What are some of the enhancements I can expect in 9.1?

A:  First off, the taxability functionality between 8.0 and 9.1 is a big plus as 8.0 was not supported by Oracle with the Vertex reciprocity enhancement functionality. Clients will gain all of that if they have a mobile workforce. This is especially relevant to construction companies who tend to cross local or state lines.

Most of the enhancements in the 9.0 release were geared toward

the Construction Industry especially in the area of Project Management and Government Contracts. Whether you are in this particular industry or not, you can leverage the functionality in the modules that feed into the new Project and Government Contract Accounting module which the time and labor module in the HCM suite does.

The labor re-class functionality is also new. Additionally, the Labor Distribution Periods functionality has been added which allows you to control time entry periods independent of the payroll cycle.

Component Pay allows you to link an additional pay type to the base pay type. You would see this in the case where employees all receive a uniform allowance or tools allowance every pay period. You can tag the pay type to the employee's regular pay.

Lastly, for salaried employees, you can capture the actual work time for billing purposes but pay their correct salary. Total hours worked appear on the invoice for the client along with an adjusted hourly rate,

Expertiser

Last month's question:

You are a chef in a remote area with no clocks and only a four-minute and a seven-minute hourglass. On the stove is a pot of boiling water. A very picky customer asks you to cook a nine-minute egg in exactly nine minutes and you know the customer is a perfectionist and can tell you if you under cook or over cook the egg by even a few seconds. How can you cook the egg for exactly nine minutes to please the customer?

The correct response to last month's question?

1. Flip both hourglasses over and drop the egg into the water.

2. When the 4-minute timer runs out, flip it over (4 minutes elapsed, 3 remaining on the 7-minute timer.

3. When the 7-minute timer runs out, flip it over (7 minutes elapsed, 1 remaining on the 4-minute timer)

4. when the 4-minute timer runs out, flip the 7- minute timer over. (8-minutes elapsed) 6 minutes remain on the 7-minute timer, but flipping it over leaves 1 minute's worth of sand. When it runs out exactly 9 minutes will have elapsed.

There were several correct responses to the January Expertiser, but the most correct answer was a TIE: The correct responses came in from Tom Madden from Little Rapids and Travis Wendland from Amway. Congratulations!

Ninja Cookie

Kristin loves spending time with her five nieces and two nephews. Over Christmas break she had a "Mega" sleep-over where they were all at her house. They converted the family room into a makeshift fort, using bed sheets with clothes pins to cover the room. The highlight of the sleepover was the "Ginger Ninja cookies they made together. "Even the boys had fun because ninjas are cool!"

One of Kristin's favorite aspects about being part of the GSI Family is the helpful nature of everyone she has encountered, coupled with the excitement of the growth that GSI is experiencing. "I like the people and the variety," she says.

When not supporting clients, or internal responsibilities, Kristin enjoys reading historical fiction set in the 18th or 19th century. Ever been asked to convert from actual cost to standard cost in your JD Edwards system? Here are a few tips for a smooth conversion:

  • Check with your auditors on any potential tax implications.
  • Complete ALL open actual cost work orders.
  • Close ALL open actual cost work orders by running R31804 Variances. The Work Order "PPFG" flag must equal "3."
  • For all actual cost items, change the F4105 Sales/Inventory cost for "07" to the current value of the Sales/Inventory value and THEN:
  • Change the F4105 Sales/Inventory Cost method from "02" or "09" (your current cost method) to "07." Otherwise, the journal entries will be incorrect.
  • If using cost level "3" for actual costing, you must convert the items to cost level "2." Use R41815 to do the conversion.
  • Verify that work center rates are set up for "07" and that any extra costs are also set to "07."

Make sure you allow time to thoroughly test this change before moving to production.

Q&A

Q:  At my company, our finished good is a "made-to-order" product comprised of assembled components. We need the ability to plan and order the required parts based on the customer's specifications. Can I do this in JD Edwards Kits Processing or do I need JD Edwards Configurator?

A:  JD Edwards Configurator is the ideal solution when your end-product is the result of a "made-to-order" sale.  There are complex configurations of planning and pricing rules involved in setup. The selection of features and components in the sales order process, determine the cost, price and parts required to assemble the finished product. Bills of Materials, work orders and purchase orders are generated from the Sales Order/Configurator process.

Kit Processing in JD Edwards is a good tool to use when you are selling a non-stock item that is made up of several stocked items.   You can still create a Bill of Materials for these "kits."

Last month, we didn't receive any correct responses to "take ninefrom six, ten from nine, fifty from forty and leave six." The correct answer is:

SIX - 9 (IX) = S

9 (IX) - 10 (X) = I

40 (XL) - 50 (L) = X

==> SIX

Do you need scheduler running on both Dev and Prod machines?  No problem.

Scheduler tables exist in SY9xx and you probably have OCM records for the F913xx tables in all environments. Assuming that SY9xx is for Prod, you need scheduler tables and OCM for the Dev server.

Open the Dev server INI file, find the database system settings and note the environment.

In the control tables scheme for that environment, create a set of scheduler tables. In all of the non-prod OCM records, map the scheduler tables to your non-prod tables, then enable scheduler on the non-prod server and bounce Dev JDE services.

When the scheduler service starts, it will use the OCM and environment from database system settings.  When you log into a non-prod environment and go to the scheduler app you will be working with the non-prod scheduler.

You can have a set of tables for every environment, but every path code is as far as I would go.

Q&A

QIn our business we buy big ticket items that are the framework for our end product and engineer these items to our customer's custom specifications. Once the framework is delivered until the finished product leaves our facility, we own it. We need a solution that will position us as a full service provider for maintenance and warranty claims once we sell these engineered assets and, as such, need to maintain important details such as serial and lot numbers for all the custom components. Is there a solution in JD Edwards that can not only manage our company-owned assets, but also those we purchase and sell?

ACapital Asset Management (CAM), part of the JD Edwards Asset Lifecycle Management Suite, is the perfect solution for managing all of your engineered assets.  As the assets are in your facility and being configured to your customer's requirements, you can capture all the serial numbers and other pertinent information in the CAM system.  This gives you a competitive edge as you are now in a position to meet the future service, maintenance and warranty needs of your customers.  You can also use the data captured in CAM to run campaigns to increase your service and warranty business
